"Our grand dog Franklin has been in our family for 6+ years. The southern rescue dog and combat Ranger veteran have become a pair. Two lives intertwined - two lives saved. This summer Franklin had surgery. No quick movements, no running, no stairs, lots of care and attention. Post-surgery Brian's work prohibited 24-hour care and his second floor apartment with steep stairs a carry challenge. We as grandparents became the day caretakers in our one level ranch. The 2 steps to the rear fenced in yard converted to a handicap ramp. Brian commuted to work in NH. He and Franklin camped out in the backyard and screen porch. The observations: On Brian leaving Franklin's facial expression said "what about me?" Before Brian would return - his times varied, Franklin reflected a sense of anticipation and awareness. On Brian's arrival there was excitement and joy. Two lives intertwined. Now physically healed, now together and maintaining and healing themselves. This is what Delta Dogs does. We see it with Franklin and Brian and the many veterans and dogs that have graduated as service dogs. At graduations, we see the veteran and service dog's accomplishment and them as a unit. I look at the attendee's family, loved ones etc. and see the joy and promise of the future. How far we have come. Looking to the Walk and Wag we see the many partnerships.
